The Catalan competition Giroví is a contest of wines and sparkling wines of Catalonia that aims to reward the best wines produced in the region of Empordà, province of Girona. The competition is organized by the Wine Association of Empordà and has been held annually since 1997.
The contest is open to cellars that produce wines in Empordà, whether with grapes grown in their own vineyards or acquired from other local producers. The wines are judged in different categories, according to their type and vintage, and are evaluated by a panel of expert winemakers and sommeliers.
The winning wines receive medals classified as GREAT GOLD, GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE. They also receive recognition from the wine industry and consumers. The awards also help promote the wines of the area and boost their competitiveness in the national and international market, showing the quality of their product and talent in the production of unique and representative Empordà wines.
This year, Gresa Expressió 2016 has once again received an important recognition in the world of wine, as it has won a gold medal in the Giroví 2023 competition. It is a wine with designation of origin Empordà that shows a clear example of excellence in Catalan wines.
Gresa Expressió 2016 from Vinyes d’Olivardots is a red wine made from the grape varieties Carignan, Grenache and Syrah.
Through an ecological viticulture under the principles of biodynamics, with rigorous manual work in the vineyard and focusing on the recovery of native varieties, we carry out a manual harvest in boxes of 10 Kg, making a first selection in the vineyard and a second grape-to-grape selection in the cellar.
Gresa ferments in stainless steel tanks and French oak foudres at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and a long maceration. Its pressing is with a vertical press at very low pressure, and it is aged for 18 months in French oak Bordeaux casks, combining fine and extra fine grain to obtain more complexity.
This wine is characterized by its bright cherry color, with aromas of black fruit, ripe cherry, mineral notes on a background of balsamic and Mediterranean herbs. In the mouth, it is intense, unctuous, sweet, voluminous, and fruity with a marked acidity and a velvety, fresh, and long tannin.
