SOILS

Our vineyards grow in the different types of soils that can be found in Empordà, each contributing its unique characteristics and influencing the singularity of our wines. Four types of soils stand out: granite, slate, sand, and alluvial.

Granite
Present in our Olivardots vineyards, which has given its name to our first wine. This sandy soil with meteorized granite and quartz mineral provide exceptional elegance and great aromatic complexity. It is an acidic soil with little organic matter, which imparts the grapes with subtle notes originating from the predominant terroir of Empordà.
Sand
Particularly interesting soil, as it houses our Carinyena vineyard, which is over 100 years old. This sandy soil from eroded granite and with little organic matter provides finesse, delicacy, and elegance to the wines produced. The old vines located in this territory offer grapes with a distinctive character and exceptional complexity.
Slate
Soil found in the highest vineyard areas in Empordà, at around 170 meters above sea level. This soil contributes significant minerality to the grapes, giving our wines a austere structure and a personality marked by the vine's struggle, manifested in concentration and maturity along with freshness in the wines. Located in the Serra de l’Albera and Cap de Creus area, they capture all the richness of slate and transform it into intense and vibrant flavors.
Gravelly
The flatter area, in the center of the region, gently sloping towards the southeast. This area is formed by alluvial deposits, characterized by its richness in pebbles and its silty texture. It is on this terrain that our old vineyards of white varieties are found, bringing richness and vibrancy to the grapes, reflected in wines with an elegant balance, pleasant salinity, freshness, and refreshing minerality.

THE VINEYARD

Vinyes d’Olivardots wines are an expression of the spirit of Empordà, combining balance, elegance, and complexity in every sip through its landscapes, terroirs, and the purity of its varieties.

Currently, we are immersed in the project of planting new hectares for the recovery of native white varieties such as Grey Carignan and White Carignan. This task is an essential part of our commitment to preserving native varieties and the viticultural diversity of the region.

In the new plantations, we have opted to use the “lyre” training system, with the aim of developing a larger leaf surface area on each vine. This improves the sun exposure of the berries, allowing for a complete and balanced grape ripening. Additionally, this system keeps the plants well-aerated, minimizing the risk of fungal diseases. This enables us to work with phytotherapy, using infusions of natural plants prepared by ourselves as a method of vine care. With a specific pruning plan and a rigorous grape selection in all the vineyards, we achieve a very limited yield per hectare. This practice allows us to obtain high-quality grapes, with exceptional concentration and a full expression of their terroir. Each grape has the opportunity to shine and contribute with its own personality to our wines.
