New Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil – 100% Argudell


Vinyes d’Olivardots is a small family winery born in 2006 in Capmany (Alt Empordà). As a result of rigorous manual work in the vineyard and following an organic viticulture under the principles of biodynamics; Carme and Carlota, mother and daughter, oenologists and vinegrowers, produce unique wines through the recovery of native varieties and old vineyards. Now also produce Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil!

Centennial olive trees

In the past, monoculture did not exist, every vineyard shared space with olive, fig and fruit trees. There are still plots with this soul, like the one in the image. Centuries-old vines and olive trees that have coexisted for centuries, increasing biodiversity on the estates, exchanging flow through root exudation, and giving to the farmer the classic foods of the Mediterranean diet, oil and wine.

It’s true that Vinyes d’Olivardots has only produced wine for 20 years, the oil has always been reserved for family consumption due to the few olive trees on the property. Now, with a few more plots, and seeking to follow the same philosophy as in viticulture, we are committed to recovering century-old trees with the autochthonous variety of Empordà: Argudell.

Characteristics of the Argudell variety

  • Variety known for making high quality oils
  • Autochthonous from Alt Empordà and south France
  • Drought-resistant olive trees but sensitive to the olive fly
  • Branching is sparse, allowing tramuntana wind to filter through its branches.
  • When the olive is ripe it acquires a wine-red color.

Sensitivity to the fly has always been a problem, in synergy olive groves were planted as firebreaks at the feet of the olive trees or on the edges of the plots. A plant that is sticky for the aphid and has a very peculiar smell that generated rejection of the olive fly. Currently, many are still found in the crops and we seek to repopulate them and maintain the links to achieve natural defenses.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Oli-Vardots from the Vinyes d’Olivardots winery is a 100% Argudell variety oil, first pressed, made with organic olives harvested daily by hand. A high quality oil with the Extra Virgin category.

The Catalan Oil Tasting Panel is the official body that will carry out the sensory and organoleptic analysis that will complement the chemical analysis. A group of expert tasters will determine if the virgin olive oil has no defects and if, due to its characteristics of freshness and intensity, it can become the extra virgin category.

Extra virgin olive oil should present a fruity and intense green aroma such as cut grass, artichoke and/or nuts like almond. In the mouth it should have a complex profile with a medium astringency, and a sweet-spicy balance.
