Last edition of the Vinari Awards from Catalonia, the winery Vinyes d’Olivardots, located in Capmany (Alt Empordà), was the winner of the Nissan Award to the Best Ecological Project. This award recognizes a winery that since its foundation, put faith in a stronger way for being eco-friendly and sustainable.
Vinyes d’Olivardots is a familiar project run by two women, Carme Casacuberta and Carlota Pena, mother and daughter, oenologists and vine growers. A winery that starts 16 years ago with the aim to work with an ecologic agriculture at all their vines by the bases of the biodynamic and looking for taking care about the sustainability as a priority.
If we go inside the biodynamic agriculture, we use animals as “a fundamental part” for the balance role in the ecosystems and for increasing the biodiversity.
For example, our sheep fertilize the grown as a natural way when there’s no grapes at the vineyard; chickens for having eggs and to control the insects and the worms; bats who live inside the winery and they control the flying insects; cats and dogs for keeping the rodent animals and the wild boar away.
Another important line developed for Carlota, is the phytotherapy. We use medicinal plants to protect our vineyard from the fungus, diseases, insects, the frosts or including for palliate the hydric stress. The infestations, like Lobesia Botrana, we use the sexual confusion with pheromone to avoid another agressive ways which could kill the animals.

Furthermore, we make our own compost to recycle all the waste that we generate during the year as rests of the harvest and the vineyard raise or manure from the animals when we clean the farm. Every year we’ll do between 30 and 40 tons of waste, which we’ll use to fertilize the vineyard after 12 months composting and close the natural circle.
The enoturism, instead, is a very important activity for the wineries which has increased exponentially in few years and which we create a lot of waste. So, we decided to introduce different eco-friendly ways to balance that fact like, making glasses from recycle wine bottle, refill the bottle of water from our well and using proximity products for the food pairing in the tastings and tours. The fact doesn’t finish here, because we use eco-friendly WC’s paper, and the carton we use for wine shipment in our online shop is also from certified recycled paper.
For all of that, the Vinari Awards decided to recognize the meticulous job of our winery, which come to the smallest details for carry out the wine project with minimal impact for the environment and to contribute to a better environment health, too.
Also, we were honoree with a Gold Medal in the category of Ageing Wines with one of our single vineyard collections: Vd’O 1.15, Carignan with slate soil 2015 vintage.
